How to capture action at sea: Laura Carrau’s perspective

  • 16/April/2026

By Laura Carrau, MedFoto jury member and photographer with more than 15 years of experience in nautical photography

There are moments at sea that can only be captured with a camera: a kayak gliding over crystal-clear waters early in the morning, a sail unfolding in the wind, or the power of a surfer taking on the waves as the horizon lights up with the first rays of sun. These are fleeting, unrepeatable moments, and nautical photography allows us to preserve them, share them and let others experience them through our eyes.

Taking part in MedFoto is much more than submitting an image to a contest. It is a way of showing the respectful relationship we can have with the Mediterranean, of highlighting sustainable sports and of inviting others to connect with nature. Each photograph is a small story of harmony between human beings and the sea, capable of conveying passion, emotion and respect.

When preparing your images, let the strength of the moment guide you: look for authenticity, creativity and respect for the environment. A well-composed photograph that shows life at sea, sport in full action or a landscape that reminds us of the Mediterranean’s beauty has the power to captivate, raise awareness and move people. It doesn’t matter whether you are an amateur or a professional: what truly matters is the unique perspective you bring and the story you tell.

MedFoto is built on clear values: respect for the marine environment, authenticity, diversity, inclusion and recognition of photographers. The aim is not only to reward technical skill, but also sensitivity and personal vision. Taking part is not just about competing; it is about being part of a community that loves the sea, photography and responsible sports.

Laura Carrau’s tip:

When photographing nautical sports and scenes, Laura Carrau points out that it is not so important whether the camera is a DSLR or mirrorless, but rather having a good telephoto lens, as it is often not possible to get close to the action.

“For action photography I usually work with long lenses, such as a 70–200 mm f/2.8, which is very bright, or a 100–300 mm. When I want to capture the atmosphere, landscapes or group scenes, I switch to a 24–70 mm lens, which is much more versatile.”

Her advice is clear: adapt the lens to the type of scene, anticipate the moment and always respect the marine environment while photographing.

So grab your camera, head out to the Mediterranean and let inspiration lead the way. Capture that moment only you have seen, show your connection with nature and let MedFoto—and the world—discover it. Your photograph can be much more than an image: it can be a way to highlight sport, sustainability and the beauty of the sea we all share, and to convey the emotion of experiencing the Mediterranean in its fullness.

Nautical photography reminds us that art and sustainability can go hand in hand. MedFoto offers you the platform to share your perspective, celebrate sport and promote the conservation of the Mediterranean. Now all that’s missing is for your image to tell the story.
