On Saturday, April 1, 2023, MedFoto, the first International Photography Contest of the Mediterranean, has opened the submission period for its third edition. The call for the event organized by the Alive Foundation and the Club Nàutic L’Escala will remain open until May 15.

This 2023, MedFoto once again invites both professional and amateur photographers to present their best images around the theme The sea and people. And it does so with an important novelty: this year it launches the new category Photographic story, which will reward the best work consisting of six images dedicated to one of the themes proposed by the contest.
This is added to the divisions Landscape, Wildlife, Sports and leisure, Marine trades, Underwater, Conservation and climate change and With mobile, reaffirming the open nature of the event. The MedFoto will compile the best photographs taken both on and below the surface of the water, showing both the nautical sports and professional activities that can be carried out at sea.
Participants may submit up to 15 photographs distributed in any of the proposed categories.

The prizes will put into play up to 4,000 euros of cash prizes and two special prizes. The best image taken within the photographic limits of the Costa Brava will win a weekend in a bungalow at Camping la Ballena Alegre for four people. The winner of the L’Escala division, a very special experience in L’Escala for two people that includes a hotel night with breakfast, lunch or dinner and a visit to the Anchovy and Salt Museum or the Alfolí de la Sal – L’Escala Museum.
The selection of finalist photographs will be announced on July 1st through the web and the Instagram account of the contest, from where the popular voting period will begin. The votes will discover the winner of the prize by Popular Vote, endowed with 200 euros. Voting period will end on 15 July.

The jury will be in charge of deciding the winning images of the rest of the awards at stake. This year, the jury of experts in the world of photography and the marine environment is made up of photographers Oriol Alamany, Laura Carrau, Xavier Salvador and Pere Soler, biologist Josep Vilanova, and Xavier Martínez, winner of the MedFoto 2022 edition.
The winners of MedFoto 2023 will be announced during the awards ceremony, which will take place on Friday, August 4 at Club Nàutic L’Escala. The event will also inaugurate the exhibition of the finalist images, which will be available to visit in the Club’s Board Room until September 5.
MedFoto is an initiative born from the collaboration between Alive Foundation and Club Nàutic l’Escala and aims to highlight the fragile relationship between people and the sea, as well as promote the natural values of the marine environment and encourage a responsible attitude of all agents operating in the marine world and the general public. With the collection and dissemination of the visual material of the contest, the contest aims to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the marine environment.
In this edition, the event has the support of the City Council of L’Escala, Ports de la Generalitat of Catalonia, La Ballena Alegre campsite, Portalblau Festival and Improcat.
