Submission open… MedFoto 2024 is starting!

On Monday 1st April, MedFoto, the first international Mediterranean photography contest, opens the submission period for its fourth edition. The competition, organised by the Alive Foundation and the Club Nàutic L’Escala, will be open until 15th May.

This year’s contest is supported by Ports de la Generalitat, L’Escala Town Council, Empordà Turisme, La Ballena Alegre camping, Festival Portalblau and Improcat.

An open competition

Once again, MedFoto invites both professional and amateur photographers to submit their best proposals on the theme of The Sea and People. It offers up to eight different categories with the aim of covering all points of view with images taken both on the water surface and of the sporting and professional nautical activities carried out at sea.

These are Landscape, Wildlife, Sports and Leisure, Marine Trades, Underwater, Conservation and Climate Change, With Mobile Phone and Photographic Story.The section With Mobile is dedicated to images taken with a mobile phone, while the Photographic Story division was launched in 2023 with the aim of rewarding the best photographic work made up of six images that deal with one of the themes of the competition.

Candidates may submit up to 15 photographs distributed in any of the proposed divisions between 1 April and 15 May via the MedFoto website. They will be eligible for one of the prizes in the competition.

Up to 4,000 euros in prizes

At stake, up to 4,000 euros in cash prizes that will be distributed among the overall winner, the winners in each of the categories and the image that obtains the most “Likes” on the contest’s Instagram account thanks to the Popular Vote award. The voting period will begin on 1st July, the day on which the finalist images will be announced on the MedFoto website and Instagram account, and will last until 10 July.

Two special prizes will also be awarded. The best image taken within the geographical boundaries of the Costa Brava will win a weekend in a bungalow for four people at Camping la Ballena Alegre. The winner of the L’Escala division will win a very special experience in L’Escala for two people, including a hotel night with breakfast, lunch or dinner and a visit to the Anchovy and Salt Museum or the Alfolí de la Sal – Museu de l’Escala.

Final event

The decision will be made by a jury of experts in the world of photography and the marine environment, which this year crosses borders for the first time. The committee has been renewed with the incorporation of the Italian photographer Ugo Mellone, the Basque biologist and photographer Isabel Díez and the winner of last year’s competition, Marc Marco. Laura Carrau, Oriol Alamany and Xavier Salvador complete the jury.

The winners will be unveiled during a ceremony that will take place on Saturday 27 July at the Club Nàutic L’Escala. The ceremony will also serve to inaugurate the exhibition of the winning and finalist photographs of the fourth edition of MedFoto, which will be available to be visited in the Board Room of the L’Escala sports association until 8 September.
