MedFoto announces the winners and opens its exhibition

MedFoto, the first International Photography Contest of the Mediterranean Sea, has announced the winners of its second edition. During the event, the contest exhibition was also inaugurated, a compilation of the 43 finalist images that can be visited until September 4 at the Club Nàutic l’Escala facilities.

More than 40 people joined the meeting, which has proclaimed the photograph entitled Playing with the waves by Xavier Martínez as the winner of MedFoto 2022.

The event took place on Friday, August 5 at 6:00 p.m. in the North room of the Restaurant & Gastrobar Bol Roig, located in the headquarters of the Club Nàutic L’Escala, and was also broadcast through the Zoom virtual platform. The organization decided to hold it in a hybrid format, taking into account the international nature of the contest.

Raimon Roca, managing director of the Club Nàutic L’Escala, co-organizing entity of the contest together with the Alive Foundation, has been in charge of opening and leading the act, which has counted on the interventions of the president of the Narcís Carreras Club and Mr. Josep Bofill, Mayor of L’Escala.

The most awaited moment

Right after that, one of the most exciting moments came: the long-awaited proclamation of the MedFoto winners, led by the biologist and naturalist Josep Vilanova, Patron of the Fundació Alive, together with the professional photographer specialized in nature conservation Oriol Alamany, representative of the MedFoto Jury, who has offered a brief assessment of the winning photographs from their technical side.

Finally, those attending the event went to the Board Room of the Club Nàutic l’Escala where the new MedFoto exhibition was inaugurated. A visit to the 43 best images which reflect the interpretations of their authors about the relationship between people and the sea and that can be visited until September 4.

The MedFoto main prize, consisting of 1,000 euros, was for Xavier Martínez and the image titled Playing with the Waves, included in the Wild Life category.

The award for the Underwater division went to Jordi Benítez and his image Sharing the apartment, while the winner among those in Landscape went to Rough sea 12 by Giovanni Allievi. Among the candidates for the Wildlife division, the prize went to Capuchino by Javier Herranz and among those dedicated to Sports and Leisure, to Window to the Mediterranean by Jake Abbott. Sperm Whale by Xavier Mas it’s the winner in the Conservation and Climate Change category. A winter morning by Jake Abbott, it’s the winner of the Marine Trades division and Foam snake, by Rosa Maria Vilella, the chosen one in the With Mobile Phone section. All of them will receive 300 euros in cash as winners.

During the event, the winners of the special categories L’Escala and Costa Brava were also announced. These were Repairing the boat by Antonio Garballo and Strong winds by Pedro López. Both authors will win a cash prize of 200 euros each.

The Popular Vote prize, which was revealed on July 16 once the voting period had ended on the contest’s Instagram account, went to Imprisioned by Maja Prgomet, which managed to collect 255 Likes. Prgomet will be rewarded with a four-hour sailing trip along the Costa Brava for her and her family or friends.

A collaborative project

MedFoto is an initiative born from the collaboration between Alive Foundation and Club Nàutic l’Escala and aims to highlight the fragile relationship between people and the sea, as well as promote the natural values of the marine environment and encourage a responsible attitude of all agents operating in the marine world and the general public. With the collection and dissemination of the visual material of the contest, the contest aims to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the marine environment.

In this edition, the event has the support of the City Council of L’Escala, Ports de la Generalitat of Catalonia, La Ballena Alegre campsite, Portalblau Festival and Improcat.
