Restoration of the Mediterranean Orange Coral

Description: In Cantarriján (Granada), David León, co-founder of Hombre y Territorio (HyT), together with lead researcher Alexis Sánchez, is implementing an innovative coral restoration technique as part of the MedCoral program. With precision, they transplant vibrant specimens of the endangered orange coral Astroides calycularis onto an artificial reef. This initiative not only revitalizes vulnerable Mediterranean coral communities—giving a second chance to detached colonies and creating a “genetic corridor” to ensure species variability—but also establishes sustainable diving spots, helping to protect natural reefs from the impact of recreational divers.
