Last Monday, May 15th, MedFoto, the world’s first photography contest dedicated exclusively to the Mediterranean Sea and its relationship with people, closed registrations for a record-breaking edition. The competition, co-organized by the Alive Foundation and the Club Nàutic l’Escala, has seen increased participation and has collected more photographs than ever before.

This year, nearly 1,400 photographs will undergo the selection process by the MedFoto jury, composed of six experts in the fields of photography and the marine environment, such as Oriol Alamany, Laura Carrau, Xavier Salvador, Pere Soler, Josep Vilanova, and Xavier Martínez, the winner of the 2022 MedFoto edition.
MedFoto is growing not only in the number of photographs but also in participation, surpassing last year’s figure by 50%. Additionally, it reinforces its international dimension with images submitted from countries such as France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Turkey.

Once the selection process begins, we will have to wait until July 1st to discover the finalist photographs of MedFoto, which will be published in the website gallery and on the contest’s Instagram account. This moment will mark the start of the popular voting period, which will run until the 15th of the same month, rewarding the author of the photograph that receives the most “Likes” on the contest’s Instagram account with 200 euros.
The overall winner, as well as the prizes in the eight contest categories and special awards, will be announced on Friday, August 4th, during the trophy presentation ceremony at Club Nàutic l’Escala. The event will also serve as the inauguration of the exhibition of the MedFoto 2023 finalist images, which will be available to visit until Tuesday, September 5th, at the Boardroom of the Club Nàutic L’Escala.

The third edition of MedFoto will distribute prizes totaling nearly 4,000 euros in cash among the winning proposals, in addition to two special prizes. The best image taken within the photographic boundaries of the Costa Brava will win a weekend in a bungalow at Càmping la Ballena Alegre for four people. The winner of the L’Escala division will enjoy a very special experience in L’Escala for two people, including a hotel night with breakfast, a lunch or dinner, and a visit to the Anchovy and Salt Museum or the Alfolí de la Sal – Museu de l’Escala.

MedFoto is an initiative born from the collaboration between Alive Foundation and Club Nàutic l’Escala and aims to highlight the fragile relationship between people and the sea, as well as promote the natural values of the marine environment and encourage a responsible attitude of all agents operating in the marine world and the general public. With the collection and dissemination of the visual material of the contest, the contest aims to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the marine environment.
In this edition, the event has the support of the City Council of L’Escala, Ports de la Generalitat of Catalonia, La Ballena Alegre campsite, Portalblau Festival and Improcat.
