The Dangerous Journey of the Sea Turtles

Author: Şebnem Coşkun
Description: A Caretta caretta covered in fishing net is treated by veterinarians from the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER), who continue their conservation efforts at Iztuzu Beach in Dalyan district, Muğla, Turkey. At this beach, nesting turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. After laying around ten, they enter a trance-like state. During this time, veterinarians and volunteers tag the turtle’s fin to track the country and beach where it nested, while collecting data such as tissue samples and shell measurements. Despite conservation efforts, this species—dating back 110 million years—remains endangered due to increasing environmental pollution.
